Why we choose Tableau?

We leverage our strength in traditional analysis and modeling with new age visualization tools to provide actionable “Insights on the go”.

When it comes to visualization, our goto tool these days is Tableau. Why? Glad you asked.
Comparing our experience in past projects with QlikView/Spotfire/Tableau, here are our observations:

Innovation:

Forget the feature set comparison. We like the overall philosophical approach of Tableau which completely throws the traditional BI thinking out of window. It questions the very need of fundamental BI artifacts like CUBES in this day of columnar databases, cheaper memory and large datasets. It is innovating at a much faster pace than its competitors.

Visual:

Tableau is clean head and shoulders above anything in terms of visual impact. From word clouds to bubble maps, visually it rocks.

Rich set of data sources:

Tableau offers better connectivity and connects natively to 17 data sources.
For Ericsson we have used Tableau with VoltDB. Here is the comprehensive list of data sources.

Scalable In-memory processing of data:

Tableau’s data engine is not a true in-memory database a la QlikView. But instead uploading the whole data into RAM, it intelligently chooses the data to load into RAM. This gives the scalability needed for larger datasets. Ofcourse the downside is if a data will always fit into RAM, a pure in-memory solution will work better.

Mobile:

Tableau visualizations are automatically streamlined for mobile devices (iPad, Android Tablets) thus enabling the mobility where the data and reports can be accessed from anywhere.

Ease of use:

Tableau follows the modern GUI principles with no clutter. It offers the drag and drop user friendly interface that creates reports that look great right of the gate. This encourages business users to create their own reports.

Tableau Public and Reader:

Makes it easy to distribute the reports to a much wider audience.

We are not alone in saying this.

Gartner positions Tableau as a leader in the 2014 Magic Quadrant
