The client, a prominent group purchasing organization (GPO) serving specialty care providers across the US had access to detailed transactional data, but struggled to derive actionable insights.

Which drugs were profitable at the point of dispense?
How much rebate was owed per manufacturer agreement?
Where were stockouts impacting care continuity and where were expiring drugs being wasted?

Each location used siloed systems, and existing reporting tools were reactive rather than predictive. The business lacked a unified view to align procurement, inventory, and financial decisions.

Lack of Visibility Across Stakeholders - Drug usage and profitability weren’t being tracked across member practices, manufacturers, and distributors.
No Rebate Intelligence - Existing contracts and rebate clauses couldn’t be tied back to dispense history with accuracy.
Inventory Volatility - Stockouts and expiries occurred in parallel, with no redistribution strategy across locations.
Reactive Decision-Making - No forecasting of Days Inventory On Hand (DIOH), and no automation in cross-location stock balancing.

The client needed a custom analytics engine that could bring together real-time, practice-level intelligence across supply chain, contract, and dispense data.

What We Delivered

Ideas2IT designed and implemented an end-to-end Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) solution layered on top of the client’s transactional data systems (OLTP).

Core Implementation Highlights:

Dimensional Modeling for Procurement Context : We translated complex transactional data into dimensions and facts modeling by drug category, manufacturer, location, dispense channel, and more.
OLAP Engine + BI Dashboards : Built a robust OLAP platform with deep integration into the client’s business intelligence stack providing drill-down views across suppliers, drugs, and practice performance.
Profitability Intelligence : Calculated per-dispense profitability using Medicare pricing benchmarks and practice-level operational data.
Rebate Analytics : Tied rebates to contracting systems and drug history, improving rebate accuracy and negotiations.
Inventory Forecasting (DIOH) : Used dispense history and scheduled appointments to forecast Days Inventory On Hand.
Redistribution Algorithms : Created recommendations for moving expiring inventory to high-utilization locations and backfilling stockout drugs from surplus locations.
Continuous Optimization : Monitored platform usage and query patterns to optimize OLAP performance and evolve dashboard utility.
